When planning the recent CavesLIVE distance learning webcast from the 260-feet deep Luray Caverns in Virginia, the production team of Williams County Public Schools knew they needed a robust, reliable transmission solution that could handle the lack of bandwidth in the cave.

“We like to go live to enhance real-time interaction and connect students with experts anywhere in the country or world,” said Richard Shahan, Supervisor, Media Production Services for Prince William County Public Schools, the producer of the live event. “We were challenged with broadcasting in an underground location with little bandwidth or infrastructure. The LU600 with HEVC performed above and beyond our expectations even in the bandwidth-challenged underground environment. It was easy to connect, user-friendly, reliable, and great quality. We had no issues getting content out to our 25K live viewers.”

When your team started planning this event, why was it so important to go live?crew6 400
We like to go "live" to enhance real time interaction and connect students with experts anywhere in the country or world really.

What were the technology/infrastructure challenges or your team’s fears in planning this live stream?
Challenges include broadcasting from underground, lack of bandwidth in cave, remote area, little infrastructure.

When you heard about the LiveU unit, why was it the right one for this particular stream?
Well, if you have cell service, you can use LiveU. We broadcast from remote areas, often.

How did the stream end up going and what did everyone think of the quality?
We heard nothing but compliments. No issues with nearly 25,000 live viewers. Looked great.

Our Engineer said it performed above and beyond expectations. Easy to connect. User friendly with good feedback. Automatic adjusting and the record was very good HD as well.

Did it meet or exceed your expectations?

Any final thoughts?
No regrets. Next use will probably be remote areas of the upper west including Montana, Yellowstone areas.

I look forward to challenging the LiveU system and support team on our next adventure.
